Algui Ulaan Tsav

Algui Ulaan Tsav

As you may know, the Gobi Desert of Mongolia is a paradise for paleontological researchers and experts. There are many different formations which reserve numerous species of different time periods throughout the Gobi Desert. Algui Red Crack (the meaning is Algui Ulaan Tsav in Mongolian) is the paleontological site where you can see dinosaur skeletons and crystalized eggs in their natural states hiding under the ground. Algui Red Crack is located in the territory of Mandal-Ovoo soum, Umnugobi province.

It is a red clay or sandstone mountain range at the altitude of 1375-1695m above sea level. The whole area is stretched through 40-60km and covered 140814.97 square meters of land. The place was started to be protected by state as a natural reserve in 2005 and as a paleontological site since June 2008. Algui Red Crack is covered with sedimentary or lithology of the Lower Cretaceous period. Geological characteristics are alluvial and occasional proluvial fan with brown, red and carbonaceous clay stones and gritstone. Carbonate concretions, red gravellite and conglomerate are common in the channel bars of a river.

Algui Ulaan Tsav Dinosaurs

Many paleontological expeditions took place at Algui Red Crack . The most dinosaur findings are considered to be of Cretaceous period (70-75 million years ago).

So you can hike around and hunt dinosaur remnants, witnessing them with your own eyes in the wild nature. Apart from the dinosaur skeletons you might see wild animals such as wild sheep ‘argali’ /ovis ammon/, black-tailed gazelle, Mongolian gazelle and vultures. This place becomes oasis-like during rainy months, attracting animals to water.

Tourist Ger Camp

There is only one tourist camp running during tourist season so far. ‘Gobi Dinosaur’ tourist camp is located right in behind of the Algui Red Crack. The tourist camp does a good job to take care of the area and escort tourists to certain places where you can see the dinosaur bones and eggs. They even put fences around some bones for protection. For it is only camp around the area their service is reasonably good, providing delicious meals and comfortable beds, as well as hot shower.
